Winterreise Opera      4/24/2016 7:00:00 PM
5157074425
Des Moines Art Center, Des Moines
In January 2016, Des Moines Metro Opera (DMMO) will collaborate with the Des Moines Art Center to present a staged, multimedia production of Schubert's Winterreise (Winter’s Journey) conceived and performed by David Adam Moore and his production team, GLMMR. A NYC-based art and design collective, GLMMR was founded in 2012. It includes artists and performers from a diverse range of disciplines - photography, choreography, film production, visual art, stage design, music composition, graphic design, theater, dance, and opera - who have distinguished themselves internationally in their respective fields. Its body of work includes gallery installations, theatrical productions, concert visuals, film, commercial video projects, and street art. Franz Schubert revolutionized the German art song in a very real sense: He was among the first to exploit the possibilities of song cycles (within which a continuous narrative thread unifies the texts), and he brought a new level of sophistication and insight to the setting of poetry. The perfection with which melody and accompaniment suit the text in so many of his songs has rarely been approached. The 24 songs of Winterreise, from 1827, stand among Schubert's masterpieces in the art of song. In this desolate winter trek, the musical treatment is heavy with misery, particularly noticeable in the way melodic lines tend to drop at the ends of phrases. The more outwardly expressive nature of the songs in Book II of the cycle shows Schubert on a new plane of inspiration; it's capable of revealing, even in the gloom, marvelous emotional vistas.
